 Parish Court Minute Book

This is the Parish Court minute book from July 12, 1875 to March 27, 1880, with Judge W.B. Hyman presiding. Back then, court was in session on Saturdays! At the time, Jefferson Parish just lost a major portion of the East Bank, with the annexation of Jefferson City and Carrollton to New Orleans and Orleans Parish. The parish seat was in Harvey, and the parish was governed by two police juries, one for the Left (East) Bank and one for the Right (West) Bank. Parish Court was a small claims (including small successions/probates) court which existed for approximately a decade. This is the only extant minute book from this particular court. Because of file size, the book has been broken up into three files.

The Society extends its appreciation to the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission for funding this digitization project.
