Jefferson Parish School Board 1927 Census

This is the Jefferson Parish School Board census for 1927. These censuses were apparently done every four years. It will be valuable to genealogists researching any ancestry, because it purports to list every "educable" child in Jefferson Parish, "white" and "colored," starting with age 6 up to and including age 18, along with the name of a parent or guardian and an "address," which could be a numerical address and street name, just a street name, or just a community name.

The listings are by wards, with two volumes per ward. At the time, Jefferson Parish consisted of nine wards, the approximate descriptions of which were:

First Ward -- Gretna, including McDonoghville, Suburban Park, and Brooklyn Pasture (odd-numbered, downriver side of Lavoisier Street to Orleans Parish line). Second Ward -- Gretna, including Gretna and New Gretna (included even-numbered, upriver side of Lavoisier Street). Third Ward -- Gretna, including Mechanickham and New Mechanickham, and Harvey east of the Harvey Canal. Fourth Ward -- Harvey west of the Harvey Canal, Marrero, Westwego, Amesville (Ames Farm), Nine Mile Point, Walkertown, and Lake Salvador. (This ward had names which apparently should have been in the Sixth Ward; see Sixth Ward, Volume 2.) Fifth Ward -- Avondale and Waggaman. (Note that Waggaman School pupils were listed at the end of the Fourth Ward census.) Sixth Ward -- lower Harvey/lower Marrero (today's Estelle area), Crown Point, Barataria, Lafitte, and Grand Isle. Seventh Ward -- Shrewsbury, Harlem, Harahan (outside city limits), Jefferson Heights, Southport, Labarre, Jefferson Terrace, Orleans Parkway, Suburban Acres, Freiburg, Deckbar, West Carrollton, and New Carrollton (collectively today's 70121 ZIP code and that part of 70123 east of the Harahan city limits). Eighth Ward -- Suburban Acres, Labarre, Harlem, Bucktown, East End, Metairie (today's Old Metairie area), and Shrewsbury. (This ward was north of the Illinois Central Railroad tracks from the Seventh Ward.) Ninth Ward -- Harahan (within city limits), Little Farms, Hanson City, and Kenner.

The Society extends its appreciation to the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission for funding this digitization project.
