Magnolia Lane

Significance:

The marker commemorates the area known as Nine Mile Point, which was the site of Fortier Plantation. It was also one of the first locations for schools and churches in the area, and later, the site of a World War I commissary. The area was once the home of Francois Quinet, Sr., a statesman and developer of early New Orleans. Nearby was the site of Fort Banks, which blockaded the river during the Civil War.

Location and Early Significance:

  • Nine Miles Upriver: As the name suggests, Nine Mile Point was a geographic location on the Mississippi River approximately nine miles upriver from the city of New Orleans. This strategic location made it important for both settlement and defense.
  • Early Settlement: The marker notes that the area was one of the first locations for schools and churches, indicating its early establishment as a community hub outside of the main city.
  • Fortier Plantation: The most prominent feature of Nine Mile Point was Fortier Plantation. Plantations along the Mississippi River were crucial for the cultivation of crops like sugar and cotton, relying heavily on enslaved labor.

Francois Quinet, Sr.:

  • Statesman and Developer: The marker highlights Francois Quinet, Sr., as a significant resident of Nine Mile Point. His description as a “statesman and developer of early New Orleans” suggests he played a role in the political and economic growth of the burgeoning city. His residence at Fortier Plantation or in the vicinity further underscores the area’s connection to influential figures in Louisiana’s history.

Fort Banks and the Civil War:

  • Strategic Blockade Point: The proximity of Fort Banks to Nine Mile Point during the Civil War underscores the area’s continued strategic importance. Fort Banks, positioned on the Mississippi River, would have played a crucial role in attempting to control or blockade river traffic, a vital artery for both the Confederacy and the Union. Its presence indicates that Nine Mile Point was within the sphere of military operations during the war.

Later Development:

  • World War I Commissary: The marker’s mention of a World War I commissary at Nine Mile Point signifies the area’s continued utility for various purposes beyond agriculture and early settlement. A commissary would have served as a supply center, likely supporting military or related activities during the war.

The Magnolia Lane Highway Marker serves as a concise reminder of the diverse historical layers present at this location. It highlights the key aspects that make Nine Mile Point and the site of Fortier Plantation noteworthy in the history of the region.
