Parish Court Minute Book

Step back in time with this Parish Court minute book, spanning July 12, 1875, to March 27, 1880, under the guidance of Judge W.B. Hyman. Imagine court being held every Saturday! This record offers a glimpse into a pivotal era for Jefferson Parish, following the significant loss of its eastern territory with the annexation of Jefferson City and Carrollton to New Orleans and Orleans Parish. At the time, the parish seat was located in Harvey, and governance was divided between two police juries, one for the Left (East) Bank and another for the Right (West) Bank. The Parish Court served as a forum for small claims and minor successions/probate matters for about a decade.

Remarkably, this is the sole surviving minute book from this specific court. To facilitate online access, this invaluable historical document has been divided into three digital files due to its size.

The Jefferson Historical Society gratefully acknowledges the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission for their generous funding, which made the digitization of this important record possible.
