About Jefferson Historical Society of Louisiana
The Jefferson Historical Society of Louisiana was proudly founded in 1977 with a singular mission: to foster and celebrate the vibrant history of the people, places, and events that collectively tell the story of Jefferson Parish. For nearly five decades, we have been dedicated to safeguarding and sharing the unique heritage of our community, ensuring that the remarkable journey of Jefferson Parish is preserved for generations to come.

August 15, 1977 - The Charter for the Jefferson Historical Society is signed at Derbigny Plantation at Nine Mile Point on the West Bank L-R: Gertrude M. Beauford, Chris A. Lochbaum, Msgr. Henry C. Bezou, & Everette F. Gauthreaux

Our Mission:
To promote and preserve the diverse history of Jefferson Parish, making it accessible and engaging for all residents and visitors.
What We Do:
Our society is active throughout the year, bringing history to life through various initiatives and events:
- Collecting & Archiving: We diligently collect and preserve historical documents, photographs, artifacts, and oral histories that illuminate the past of Jefferson Parish, making these resources available for research and public interest.
- Educational Programs: We host engaging general membership meetings periodically featuring presentations on various aspects of local history.
- Signature Annual Events: Our calendar includes cherished traditions such as the Founders’ Day Banquet in February (admission by paid RSVP, with invitations mailed to members), the Thomas Jefferson Wreath Ceremony in April, and Camp Parapet Day the first Saturday of November, commemorating a significant local historical site. All functions, except for the Founders’ Day Banquet, are free and open to members and their guests.
- Publications: Members receive the informative bi-monthly JHS Newsletter, keeping them updated on society activities and local historical insights. Additionally, irregularly published issues of the Jefferson History Notebook are available free to the membership, offering deeper dives into specific historical topics.
- Community Engagement: We strive to connect residents with their heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for the stories that have shaped our unique corner of Louisiana.
