Poblacion de Barataria (Barataria Settlement)
Significance:
The marker commemorates the settlement of 56 families from the Canary Islands by Spain in 1779 to guard New Orleans. These families settled on lands starting at Crown Point. However, flooding by the Mississippi River forced most of the settlers to relocate in 1782. Efforts to resettle them finally ceased in 1802. Despite this, scattered descendants preserved the “Isleño” culture in nearby areas to the present day.
