Seven Oaks Plantation Site
Significance:
The marker commemorates the site of the Seven Oaks Plantation, which was formerly known as Petit Desert, a 1719 concession. It was among the first parish settlements, serving as a trading post and major entry port of the Louisiana colony. In 1794, Michael Zeringue established Seven Oaks Plantation. His son, Camille, built the Greek Revival style main house around 1840. During the Civil War, the plantation was occupied by Confederate and then Federal forces. After the war, the property was acquired by Columbia Gardens Resort and later by the railroad. During World War I, the house served as Army barracks. It was later returned to a private residence but was vacated in 1957 and demolished in 1977.
