Terrytown

Significance:

The Terrytown Historic Marker commemorates the establishment of Terrytown as a “first completely winter-summer air conditioned neighborhood.” This distinction highlights a significant aspect of the community’s development in the post-World War II era.

According to the Historical Marker Database, Terrytown was a 1960 Paul Kapelow prefab diamond-shaped development featuring an alphabetical street plan named after his daughter, Terry. The emphasis on year-round air conditioning was a notable and modern amenity for its time, contributing to the attractiveness and growth of the area.

The Terrytown Historic Marker signifies the innovative planning and development of Terrytown in 1960, particularly its early adoption of comprehensive air conditioning, which was a significant selling point and a modern convenience for residents. It stands as a testament to the post-war suburban growth and the amenities that shaped communities like Terrytown.
